The Target Query function allows you to create a mail group based on set criteria. There are four different properties in which the criteria can follow.
To access the target query, you will need to go the module dropdown, select Mail house > Target Query
Creating a new Target Query
To Create a new Target query, you will need to access the module New Target Query, and click .
This will bring up a modal, allowing you to apply the relevant settings to your query. Give your Query a Name and description to help identify its purpose.
What values are provided in the Target Query?
The Target Query will allow you adjust the rules based on the audience you would like to address. Below are the different options for these rules:
Add a mail group rule
This will allow you to select a mail group that has been created in the mail house. Adding this rule ensures you are able to select any contacts that are subscribed, unsubscribed, or bounced from specific mail groups. Furthermore, you can add a number of mail group rules to merge multiple groups. Ultimately, you will have a larger list for marketing campaigns or communications.
- Subscribed: Contacts that are subscribed in the selected mailing list.
- Unsubscribed: Contacts that are unsubscribed in the selected mailing list.
- Bounced: Contacts hard bounced in the selected mailing list.
Add a field value rule
Setting a field value rule relies on the standard and custom fields available in your account. An example of this being used would be to create a list of contacts that come from a specific company or several companies.
Below are the operands seen in this rule type:
- Equals: Strictly matches the field entered in by user (case sensitive) or exact number
- Contains: Contact's details contains the keyword entered in by user (case sensitive) or number
- Is not equal to: Contact's Number field does not equal the entered number in this field
- Is blank: If the contact's details are blank for the selected field.
- Is not blank: If the contact's details are NOT blank for the selected field.
- Is less than: Contact's number fields are less than the entered number in in this field
- Is less than and equal: Contact's number fields that are less than or equal the entered number in this field
- Is greater than: Contact's number field is greater than the entered number in this field
- Is greater than and equal: Contact's number field is greater than or equal to the entered number in this field

-

Date Range:
-

Add an activity rule
Activity rules are dependent on your contacts' response to emails and surveys you have sent out. The statuses: sent, opened, unopened, clicked, subscribed, unsubscribed, hard bounced and soft bounced are based on emails.
However, opened, clicked and subscribed can be used to create target queries in landing pages. Opened in landing pages represents visits in a landing page report.
Submitted is survey specific. It refers to contacts who have submitted a response to a selected survey.
Post Code
There is a postcode feature available allowing you to create mail groups based on their distance from a particular location. This can be very useful to segregate your contacts so that they receive relevant, localised information.
The postcode property will display when a custom field called “Postcode” has been made. When importing your contacts, be sure to include their postcodes in the csv file and map them to the postcode custom field.
Set the geographical radius around a particular postcode, for example:
This will create a mail group of everyone with a postcode of 2042 as well as anyone within a 100 km range of this postcode region.
The postcode radius is rounded to the nearest kilometre. If 0 kilometres is selected, there will be no one added to the group.
Below are the operands seen in this rule type:
- Is: If contact's postcode is within the radius of the nominated postcode.
- Is not: If contact's postcode is NOT within the radius of the nominated postcode.
Can I select multiple value rules in the one query?
The answer is Yes. You can create sophisticated target queries based on multiple criteria. Mixing and matching different rules paves way for a tailored list. This could improve your email campaign's response statistics!
Note: There is a maximum of 100 values per target query.
The target query is designed to be as flexible as possible. This allows you to decide if you would like all criteria to be applied or if you would like some to be optional. As you continue to choose the relevant settings to your query, the and/or option will appear between each rule. Select the one that meets your needs. The difference between the two settings are explained below.
AND - The criteria above and below this must be met
OR - Either condition must be met
Once complete, Save your Target Query and wait for processing.
Adding the Target Query I've just processed into a mailing list
To add the query you have processed into a group, you will need to select it via the radio option. Click the Actions option, and select Add to Mail Group.
This will bring up a modal, allowing you to specify whether the contacts derived from the query will go into an existing mail group or a brand new mail group. Adding it into a new mail group, will require you to give the group a name and folder it will be placed into.
Note: Once the process is complete, you will receive an email with the query's details.
