ACMA: What is an Authorised Contact for our organisation and how do I find them?

New SMS legislation is coming to Australia on July 1st, 2026. From this date, all Sender ID's (SMS 'From' names) must be registered with ACMA in order to be accepted by Australian mobile devices.

Sender ID's must also have a valid connection to the organisation / business name. i.e. BusinessName

This is to prevent SPAM and Spoofing attempts by non-authorised players.

What does this mean for you?

  • Anyone that is currently sending Branded SMS must re-register with Swift Digital through our updated Sender ID Registration Form.
  • The official Authorised Contact for the organisation is to be provided on the form.
  • This registration will be submitted through ACMA.
  • When accepted, the Authorised Contact will receive an email from ACMA
  • The Authorised Contact must verify the Sender ID request on behalf of the Organisation.

BEFORE YOU FILL OUT THE FORM

Find out who the Authorised Contact for your organisation is.

Here is our recommended starting point:

Check the public ABR and ASIC records:

  1. Head to the Australian Business Register to find your organisation name and ABN
  2. Scroll down to the Business Name heading and click on the appropriate Business Name

  3. This will take you to the ASIC website - a 'representative' may be listed.

Your Business may operate under an Entity - if the ABN is the same, then the Authorised Contact is from the Entity organisation.

  • This may make the Authorised Contact a little harder to find, as they may not be in direct connection with your colleagues.

Check the organisations ATO portal:

  1. This requires a login to the ATO website on behalf of the organisation.
  2. Although this is the most reliable method, finding an appropriate person to login to the ATO on behalf of your organisation can be just as difficult as finding the Authorised Contact!

  3. If you've found someone who can log in to your organisations ATO account - they are likely an Authorised Contact, and/or they may be able to add additional contacts.

Otherwise, contact your organisations Tax agent for assistance finding the correct Authorised Contact for your organisation.
